| A big question amongst starting growers is, do I have a male or female cannabis plant?
Beneath we have some information on how you can see whether you have a male or female cannabis plant.
 What sex or genus does contain the weed?
The female cannabis plant contains the sensemilla, or the so called weed. So our interest mainly goes to the female plant. When this is not impregnated by the male plant then we can call it sensemilla. And the plant will get flowers which we will dry and eventually smoke.

How do you recognise a female plant?
There are many indications to recognise a female plant. A female plant looks healthy and has lots of branches.

Leaf-axils
The best way to find out if you have a male or female plant is to look at the leaf-axils. In the picture below we can recognise a female plant by the hair that comes out of the little ball.
Hair
You can also see if it is a female plant at the start of the flowering. With a female plant there will be hairs all over the far ends of the branches. This is where eventually the flowers will come, as on the beneath photo.

How do you recognise a male cannabis plant?
The male plants can most of the time be recognised fast, they don't look very healthy and only grow in height. Not very much branches. The male doesn't look very full and fat. Also the male plant often haven't got as much leafs as the female.

Little balls
The best way to see if the plant is male can be done during flowering. There will be little balls all over where normally the flowers(with females) will come up. The male will produce little balls there.

Why destroy the male?
When you grow cannabis to smoke it later or use it in another way, the males have to be destroyed. When you recognise a male it's best to remove it direct. This to prevent impregnation of the female plants. When a female is impregnated it will not produce flowers, but seeds. So destroy the male plants!
It is also possible to cross fertilize different species of cannabis plants. You could take a male Nothernlight and pollinate a female White widow with it. This way you can make your own seeds and plants eventually. But if you're a starting grower it's quite difficult. |
